ABSTRACT

To study sacred spaces is to learn about their physical, aesthetic and human characteristics but also the spiritual attachment and emotional experience emanating from them. It involves exploring and discussing how and why people are connected to places of worship, in particular. It is also about the belief that some people have of an ideal space in the hereafter or in this world. Pupils should be given opportunities to investigate religious and other spaces using a variety of media. Teachers should recognise that pupils will often observe sacred spaces in a different way to adults and that their personal experiences are valuable in understanding how they interpret local, national and global sacred spaces.
