ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how a school may go about creating a text-based curriculum, making use of the breadth of the curriculum to help children to become confident and keen users of English. A school's curriculum is more than just what should be taught to children. It also encompasses how the learning will be organised and any other experiences that will be planned for children. The structure and organisation of a particular school's curriculum will reflect the demands of the national curriculum and any national assessments, the needs of the pupils at the school and the beliefs and ethos of the school's teachers and leaders. Small-group reading comes in many forms, but can be defined by an adult working with a small group of children, using a text to teach reading. When planning small-group reading, either in class or across a school, it is important to remember that it is flexible and can be structured however the teacher.
