ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 presents an overview of the use of judgment data in second language research. In the chapter are numerous examples of studies that have used judgment data within a variety of frameworks (formal approaches, usage-based approaches, skill acquisition theory, input processing, processability theory, interactionist approaches, sociocultural theory). The chapter also considers the use of judgment data to address a range of L2 research issues, for example knowledge types (implicit/explicit and procedural/declarative). The chapter highlights this methodological tool to investigate constructs and research areas of relevance to SLA researchers, such as 1) critical/sensitive period, 2) working memory, 3) neurolinguistics processing, 4) neurocognitive disorders, and 5) pragmatics.
