ABSTRACT

This chapter expands on the claim that autobiography offers a valuable tool for teachers. It introduces the idea of using brief autobiographical vignettes called 'Key Stories' to help identify the driving forces that can sustain a fulfilling life in education. Children gain values through observation and events that resonate with them, as well as through direct teaching. Teachers, schools, curricula and friends may introduce values contrary to those of home, and these conflicting messages may result in discomfort or feelings of guilt. Excessive workloads, problems with pupil behaviour, high accountability regimes and school inspections have led many teachers to report exhaustion, lack of fulfilment, demoralisation. Ideally life beyond the classroom contributes to personal well-being and capacity to operate as an effective manager of learning.
