ABSTRACT

This chapter examines and illustrates themes for cross-curricular learning. It argues that themes arising from the lives of teachers and pupils most easily connect to the priorities, connections and attitudes important them. Each suggested theme is illustrative and chosen to help generate the globally conscious, confident friendly, flexible, collaborative, secure and creative individuals needed to tackle the challenges of 21st century life now and an in the future. The chapter suggests that meta-themes like sustainability, identity, humanity, environmental sensitivity, the arts, rights, faith, and community, cooperative and inclusive values have the potential to engage children emotionally and socially in learning activity that stretches each child's mental and physical ability. Placing sensitively chosen themes within a cross-curricular context and addressing real issues and authentic problems through them creates the conditions for creative thinking and learning.
