ABSTRACT

Outstanding starters have the following features: they have a clear purpose, they are linked to prior learning, they help students to link to new learning, they provide a challenge to students with minimal input from the teacher, they establish pace, and there is a clear routine. When asking the students to engage with a starter challenge, it may be worth considering how the geography teacher will ensure that all students are engaged with the activity. The challenge requires students to think and consider carefully what the person may be saying about the scene in the picture. Some students may offer a detailed explanation of the formation of tropical storms, along with a synopsis of the likely effects if the storms hit land. Although this activity is similar to 'What are they saying?' this question can generate a greater depth of thinking and application of prior knowledge.
