ABSTRACT

Differentiation is the way in which teachers respond to the variety of students' needs in their class, how they accommodate those needs so that all students are appropriately challenged and thus have the best possible chance to learn. An important aspect of differentiation is to know the students' starting points. From this geaography teachers will be able to plan effectively to meet the range of needs may have in class. Rather than guessing or assuming what the students know, begin each topic with a pre-test. The chapter shows an example of a pre-test created on tropical rainforests. Progress tracker activity gives both the students and the teacher a clear indication of progress within their lesson. Photographic stimuli are commonly used in geography examinations, both at GCSE and A Level. This technique aims to develop students' ability to respond to exam-style questions, whilst also improving their skills of photograph interpretation.
