ABSTRACT

Paul Neurath presents detailed information on the research in a lecture and later published the study 'Paul Felix Lazarsfeld's contribution to the beginnings of mass-communications research' in German. Paul Lazarsfeld's cooperation with the Austrian Radio-Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (RAVAG) radio station began in connection with some experiments that were being carried out by the Institute of Psychology at Vienna University. Before taking a closer look at the research on Radio-Wien's radio listeners, headed by Lazarsfeld, it is worth touching on at least some of the sociologically interesting findings produced in a three-stage study by Herta Herzog. While Lazarsfeld was working at Newark University in New Jersey he got the opportunity to examine data on the sales of approximately twenty magazines in a hundred cities across the United States. However, he first asked whether it is possible to detect any regional differences in the 'reading ranks' between groups of cities categorised by geographical regions.
