ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 focuses on academic development—the domain that sets school counseling apart from other counseling specialties. Crosswalking and response-to-intervention approaches used by school counselors to aid in closing achievement gaps are described and illustrated along with instructional strategies, classroom management, curriculum development, classroom guidance lesson plans, and the development of action plans. The school counselor’s role in preparing students for standardized tests is examined. The interactive nature of multiple intelligences is examined in relation to curriculum development and student learning. A brief look at No Child Left Behind mandates is reviewed along with the new vision for school counseling. Alternative education programs to meet the special needs of diverse student populations are introduced.
