ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author argues that one of the most significant barriers to it is the wave of right-wing populism which continues to spread across the world like wildfire. In his analysis of the threat posed by populism, Evan Davis argued that the people won't have to wait for long for it to implode because the people have already reached what he called 'Peak Bullshit'. In light of this threat to democratic life, the appeal of left-populism is clear. For Mouffe, one of the most important points to make about left-populism is that it is a strategy, and not an ideology. The author's argument in the chapter has been that populism inhibits the people capacity to imagine, and to realize, a new and more ethically sustainable form of political life. Trust in politics, including democratic politics, is low, and there is a general mood of fatalism which pervades societies all over the world.
