ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the authors' approach and some findings from their research with the text in the native language, Spanish, to show that the approach is relevant to the researcher and teacher of reading in a native as well as foreign language context. In the research project, they used a text in Spanish to take the notion of a continuum of cultural schemata into account. The chapter illustrates with data from several participants in order to gain a broad sense of how cultural understanding took place, and the use of multiple excerpts from different data types allows us to achieve depth in the analysis of the individual cases. The chapter shows how Tacuara fluctuated between stereotypical and critical interpretations in the tasks that she produced. The reading response and visual representation tasks brought to the surface the readers' critical cultural awareness, which the interviews served to confirm.
