ABSTRACT

The concept of respect often emerges as an important aspect of upholding honor. Religion was described as a means to strengthen and honor one's self-worth, and to attain self-respect through actions. Self-respect and self-worth were used throughout interviews with regard to how participants defined honor and what it means to be honorable, as well as in discussing how to honor was lost and regained. Particularly in honor societies, women have to carefully display an image of strength, determination, and a voice without crossing boundaries. While thousands of women are killed in the name of honor every year, sometimes one high profile case can get attention more easily than others. Self-worth was a topic that came up often with our participants, not necessarily as a concept that was openly discussed within the home, but rather one that came up time and time again through other avenues.
