ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the use of Information and communication technologies (ICTs) for climate change communication in the Pacific. It demonstrates how strategic integration of participatory media at community level encourages greater citizen engagement by enabling them to record, share and discuss environmental issues in their own environment. The chapter also provides some innovative examples of ICT responses to disaster risk reduction and other environmental challenges by governments and regional organizations. It demonstrates that despite living on the margins of the digital revolution, Pacific island communities are proactively using media and communication to create awareness of and find solutions to the many environmental challenges. ICTs offer a powerful way of inviting wider representation of people's voices and views, which are necessary for democratic participation. Regional organizations have realized the critical role of communication and are implementing a range of measures to enable information dissemination at various levels.
