ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at transition through migration and movements across contexts because people have always ‘moved’, whether this is everyday movement between contexts like home and school, or home and work; or whether it is large-scale migrations such as moving from one country to another. It explores transitions that are closely linked with everyday social practices, which are repeated activities, shared with others within social contexts with both history and meanings. Within cultural psychology, the transitional change one experiences is not a linear process with a beginning and an endpoint. The theme of ‘reconnecting’ or staying connected to different transitional contexts features in a study with adult mental health patients living in the community. Entering a well-known ‘sphere of experience’ may demand little in the way of transitional change, whilst entering into unknown ‘spheres of experience’ can create a rupture in our sense of self with ensuing uncertainty.
