ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the rationale for academic study of environmental management of the media. This is defined as a means to explore the causes and consequences of the environmental footprint of the media sector through its political economy. The focus is on regulation, policy, practice and ethical discussions within the media industry and in the wider social and political environment in which they operate. This chapter both defines environmental media management and identifies the particular areas that may influence future policy directions for coordinating it. Environmental sustainability is contextualized with emergent theoretical frameworks adapting new materialist perspectives to critique the ways sustainable development has been adopted by the media industry.
