ABSTRACT
This chapter presents a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the ways in which Violence metaphors are used by the three participant groups, and how these different uses can be variously interpreted as empowering or disempowering, particularly for patients. It provides that quantitative overview—;;looking at the frequencies of Violence metaphors across the different participant groups and genres present in corpus. The chapter considers the variety of different types of Violence metaphors—;;different linguistic realisations—;;that are used by three participant groups. It also considers the topic areas that are talked about by means of the most common lexical groupings of Violence metaphors in corpus: the relationship with cancer; the consequences or effects of the illness and its treatment, and death; and the relationship with the healthcare system. Violence metaphors are also used to describe the relationship patients and carers have with their healthcare professionals and/or the healthcare system.
