ABSTRACT

Although this is a “How-To” book about translating songs, its advice differs from the actual practices that many song-translators have followed. Whereas this book has said: “Try to make close translations”, many translators seem to have often proceeded from the injunction: “Don’t translate, adapt”. Yet if the approach outlined here seems hostile to adaptations, that is mostly because it has focused on actually solving translation difficulties – whereas adaptors can choose to avoid them.
