ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a mixed-method participatory action research mode for investigating mobile journalism. Case study workshops are used to investigate the development of a practical approach to teaching people to create user-generated stories (UGS). Investigating the user experience of people learning mobile journalism (mojo) praxis across community is supplemented by data from implementing mojo in the educational and professional communication spheres. This multifaceted approach explores:

• The potential of using mobile technology to train citizens to push local content out from marginalized groups;

• Mobile journalism as a curriculum device across education for increasing engagement, digital literacy skills and employment prospects; and

• The application of mobile technology and digital journalism skills to create more responsive, relevant and employable journalists.
