ABSTRACT

I joined the shelter as a volunteer in 2008, and it became my task to conduct sharing sessions with newcomers. The shelter offers temporary accommodation to FDHs whose contract has been terminated or who have run away from abusive employers. It is run by the Mission for Migrant Workers, part of the charity work done by the Anglican Church in Hong Kong. The shelter aims to be ‘a home away from home’ for distressed migrant women; they do not pay anything, and they can stay for as long as they need, but they are expected to partake in domestic duties and help raise funds for the shelter during their stay. The shelter also organises a range of activities for the women, from English language classes to handicraft and other skills courses, and talks about domestic migrant worker rights. The ultimate aim of these activities is empowerment through knowledge and awareness-raising activities.
