ABSTRACT

Excerpt 3 Janet, 37 years old, Filipina, 6 years in Hong Kong (HK). Three more Filipinas were in this sharing session (Int. = male interviewer/volunteer) (original in English).

Janet’s account of her family background is commonly heard among FDHs at the shelter: driven away by poverty and social deprivation, the women feel compelled to leave home to provide an income for their families. They are particularly concerned about the future of their children (lines 4-5), and whatever sacrifices they make, they make them for their children. Ruth, a 39-year-old domestic helper from the Philippines, puts it very aptly: “I do this for my daughter to have a better future [ . . . ] so that she can study and not follow [in] my footsteps and become a domestic helper.”
