ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on to teaching and learning, the processes central to education at all levels both formal and informal, and to what happens with respect to the quality of these processes when they incorporate digital technologies as tools. It discusses the recent advances in the scientific knowledge of how people learn with "tools" that complement and extend existing sets of tools that for Vygotsky included language and number. The chapter illustrates the digital tools are present in all phases of education from early childhood through to compulsory schooling and on into tertiary education, as well as in less formal environments. It examines quality learning. The chapter considers the metacognitive and thinking skills upon which this engagement is based, and to examine how they develop. It also considers organizational perspectives and the impact of digital technologies on the role of executive leaders of K-12 schools.
