ABSTRACT

As typical children widen their horizons beyond the personal exploration of their own bodies and immediate sensory environment, they become social learners. Starting to include words in their thinking gives them a tool for sharing comments and queries, which enables them to learn much more quickly and function effectively. It is important to emphasise the multisensory nature of thinking because mental images are not just visual. They are from every sensory realm and include memories of movement, touch, etc., which all coordinate and trigger each other. Thinking is a multi-layered process that passes through overlapping phases of development. It involves the biological roots that begin in 'core knowledge', and the physical beginnings of concrete thinking are seen in the actions of 'schema'.
