ABSTRACT

The word 'math' is from Greek mathema, which means 'that which is learnt'. 'Matic' comes from matos, which means 'willing to perform'. Its original meaning comes from being 'willing to learn' – applied to anything. This chapter argues that mathematics is everywhere and its processes are for learning about life. Most special schools have provided adapted access to National Curriculum subjects, particularly Maths and English. Many are looking away from being tied to 'subject' teaching and turning towards life skills, or using a developmental curriculum including communication and cognition. Maths supports the development of curiosity and enjoyment through its ability to describe patterns and all aspects of the world around us. It is becoming common for special schools to envisage layers of curriculum to accommodate the different needs of their pupils.
