ABSTRACT

Mongolia may not necessarily spring to mind when one thinks of language revival movements, as it cannot be said to have an explicitly ‘revivalist’ policy in the same sense as prototypical cases like Catalonia. Yet in this context, nevertheless, we find discourses of threat, purity, and nationalist consolidation, and thus Mongolia provides some important insights for our analysis. Therefore, this chapter will examine how language has been invoked as a tool to safeguard borders around nation and ethnic identity in Mongolia, and the potential lessons that can be drawn from this case.
