ABSTRACT

Personal finance coverage is the segment of business journalism that aims to provide advice to readers and viewers on matters related to investing, retirement, savings and other money-related issues. Personal finance journalists who are good at writing and explaining, such as Lieber and Bryant Quinn, may be as famous as any business journalist. Newspapers across the country have been running canned personal finance columns written by a national organization, the Financial Planning Association, under the bylines of local financial planners. "Service" journalism falls into two basic categories. One is "consumer reporting" which is journalism that tells readers which products are the most reliable, the cheapest or preferred in comparison to similar products. As questions arise about the long-term viability of the Social Security system and companies struggle to properly fund their pension plans, personal finance journalism has been taking a closer look at how consumers are planning to pay for their retirement years.
