ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an account of a student in a course which encompasses the overlapping investments of the college: English for speakers of other languages and information and communications technologies (ICT)'. The student participant, Paulo, is undertaking the course at Level 1 in the United Kingdom Qualifications and Credit Framework. The purpose of the work prior to the assignment was for the students to design and complete a small survey to explore their opinions of using social media sites for educational purposes. Paulo's response to the assignment depended to a certain degree upon how effectively he responded to interactions between these actors: the teacher, the Virtual Learning Environment, and the ICT support person. Paulo's response indicates that the demarcation of functions, when it comes to his digital literacy practices, is a deliberate strategy and part of the way he organises his digital life.
