ABSTRACT

The challenge of researching a story, tracking down sources and gathering the best interviews becomes harder when we are working in a foreign country. Governments all work differently, as do the legal systems and media organisations overseas. Added to all these obstacles, an unfamiliar country may have very different attitudes to openness, Freedom of Information and human rights. The charity 'One World Media' runs regular public workshops and can offer funding and advice for young journalists working overseas. The Frontline Club in London is a meeting place for young and experienced foreign correspondents and provides excellent workshops. Some media organisations have strict ethical rules on accepting money for foreign travel and accommodation. Their staffs are not allowed to accept any funding and are not permitted to go on any funded press trips. Other organisations are happy for their journalists to report while attending PR events and trips and find added commercial funding for their work.
