ABSTRACT

From MP's expenses to the US embassy cables, some of the most influential news stories of the early twenty-first century have been researched and published using data journalism. This chapter introduces some of the basic concepts and processes involved in data journalism and point the reader towards further reading and research. The term 'data journalism' is used more frequently in the United Kingdom and specifically describes the acquisition, analysis and dissemination of data. Experts disagree on the exact definition of data journalism or computer assisted reporting (CAR). When it comes to scraping, UK and European law is complicated and depends very much on the kind of data involved. In journalism the term data visualisation tends to be used to describe information graphics. Journalists now have access to a wide variety of visualisation tools and some larger organisations have their own programmers who work with journalists to produce bespoke graphics.
