ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on an admittedly mixed bag of non-digital research tools and resources, which can be used by professional journalists to investigate and develop stories. It looks at the importance of using the telephone effectively; the services offered by professional researchers and the future of librarians and library services. Journalists who work in specialised fields, such as medical or scientific reporting, are often required to transform dry academic studies into more accessible journalistic articles, but academic journals can form a rich source of stories for all journalists. With the advent of the Internet, the role of libraries and librarians was clearly destined to change. Many news organisations were keen to save money. A librarian with a particular area of interest will not only know where to look for information but will also know the significance and context of the information and be able to suggest further contacts and potential interviewees.
