ABSTRACT

This chapter presents sequences of acquisition for seven syntactic structures of Arabic as produced by learners of Arabic L2. The manner of presentation will proceed by first showing the results from each participant at both times of data collection, Time 1 and Time 2, in order to determine the sequence of acquisition at each time for each participant, and to see whether such results conform or contradict Pienemann’s processability theory predictions. Then, the results from all participants for all structures are compiled in one table for each time of data collection. The obtained two group tables provide evidence that development of interlanguage of learners of Arabic L2 forms an implication hierarchy each time. These group tables also chart developmental sequences of IL in terms of individual structures, not just stages. The target structures are grouped within three acquisition stages, as predicted by PT, as shown in Table 5.1 in Chapter 5.
