ABSTRACT

The corpus method and data triangulation employed for the investigation of the factors affecting the distribution of adversative connectives in Russian texts translated from English are presented in this chapter, together with results obtained from the corpus analysis. A 9- million-word corpus of non-translated and translated Russian texts and their English source texts from fiction, children’s fiction and non-fiction is examined with a range of quantitative measures. Results suggest that a complex interplay of factors affects the use of connectives, which can be related to influence from target linguistic conventions, source language interference and other genre-specific considerations (e.g. audience).
