ABSTRACT

This is the second chapter in Part III ‘Comparing trends, contradictions and future trajectories’ and the last chapter of the book. It takes a prospective angle in that it discusses the future of teacher education in both countries, on the basis of what we have learned through our research. The chapter examines the paradoxes of current policy trends and how these are expected to play out in the future. In both countries, the political situation has changed in dramatic ways: in England with the impending split from the European Union; and in the United States with a new administration that is bent on rejecting past policies. We conclude that teacher education continues to be contested terrain and may become more so given the strong hold that neoliberal policies have on education. The chapter concludes by reflecting on the research reported in this book and the effectiveness of the methodology adopted. Some suggestions are made about future directions for teacher education research.
