ABSTRACT

Introductions are all about making a first impression, conclusions are about leaving a last impression, which is equally important. Conclusions are of summary and discursive conclusions. Summary conclusions are retrospective in character, and functions to gather together the ideas developed over the course of your essay. In this type of conclusion the arguments should be weighed with internal coherency. The discursive conclusion, by contrast, continues developing the argument until the last full stop. It offers scope for flair and inventiveness. Perhaps it is more conversational in tone. The minor gripes, the shorter, snappier final paragraph will make the conclusion more impressive. The flourish is an optional element in a conclusion, a final bold statement to let the reader know the essay has ended, and ended in style. A stylish end to a thoughtful and thought-provoking conclusion, which despite the odd uneven patch, any tutor would enjoy reading.
