ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what applied learning looks like in terms of day-to-day practice for teachers. Applied learning in practice is directed and enabled by a number of factors that include: curriculum content; teaching approach and strategy; the involvement of a number of professionals and institutions; professional behaviour; assessment practice; and the knowledge, approach and values of teachers and educators. Quality teaching can help learners surmount intergenerational barriers to learning, but the particular approaches and strategies for each episode of applied learning need to be embedded into the regular practice and culture of the institution. Educational institutions can do the same for teachers, with leaders giving more responsibility and autonomy to teachers to decide how their learners learn most effectively. Film School is a project run each year by the Cornwall College Camborne Media Department to create a realistic practical working environment for media and music technology students.
