ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the concept of reflective learning for teachers; discusses how professional reflection can develop a teacher's professional practice; and describes some effective approaches for professional reflection. Self-development is systematic; we never stop learning and developing, and sustained self-evaluation is critical to meaningful development as a teacher. The model of self-evaluation presented below encourages teachers, and other educational professionals, to examine work practices and related attitudes, identifying what is done well, what could be done better and maybe what should not be done at all. The value of evaluation, of examining the strengths and weaknesses of something, is well rehearsed as part of effective development. Reflective learning can be developed by keeping a reflective log or journal in which thoughts about lessons, learner progress etc. are recorded. Collaborative reflective learning enables consideration of other viewpoints and interpretations of events, which can offer new insight on how to move forward with an issue or establish that something does not require change.
