ABSTRACT

Chapters 3 and 4 found that the violations are not televised. Looking either at stories containing the phrase human rights in US television news or in months of transcripts and shooting scripts analyzed from ABC and the BBC, there are very few human rights stories broadcast on television news, even though there are human rights issues occurring throughout the world. Chapter 5 continues the comparative approach by analyzing one week of television news broadcasts in the US and UK. Building on the work of Canino & Huston (1986), one week of news coverage was considered representative for the year. Again, the very small amount of human rights information available on television news must preclude any argument in favor of the CNN Effect.
