ABSTRACT

Realism is related to positivism, which has had a massive influence on journalism. Positivism "informs the separation of facts and values associated with objective journalism, as well as its emphasis on verification and checkin", thus giving journalism the necessary 'procedures of justification' for their claims being true. In the realm of sociology and, increasingly, journalism studies, Bhaskar's Transcendental Realism is retitled as Critical Realism (CR). Critical Realists "draw on the philosophy of the natural sciences in their construction of ontological definitions for the social sciences". The authenticity of voice for these four seems to be more related to credibility and the ability to defend the news report against attack as to getting at some deeper truth of the situation. In the United Kingdom( UK) the history is slightly different, as the inscription of broadcast media, initially the BBC and later ITV, as politically neutral media allowed the print media to remain partisan.
