ABSTRACT
From 1984 to 1989, I gave regular seminars on traductologie at the Collège international de philosophie […]. [These] seminars at the Collège […] were very much led by my own research and writing. Like all the other seminars given at the institution, [they] were aimed at an audience of auditors (a mixed group of students; translators; researchers; psychoanalysts; semiologists etc.) and did not feed into a particular specialisation (whether part of a formal degree programme or not). Over the course of these five years, I covered the following topics:
the idea of literalism in translation (Winter 1984)
translation, mother tongue, foreign language (Spring 1984)
philosophy and translation (a commentary on ‘The Task of the Translator’ by Walter Benjamin) (Winter 1984–85)
the défaillance [failings] of translation (Spring 1986)
the history of translation in France (Spring 1987)
translational Babel: specialised translation and literary translation (Spring 1988)
a commentary on the translations of John Donne and Friedrich Hölderlin (Spring 1989)
