ABSTRACT

To familiarise a little more with basic corpus searches, one could repeat the same three searches frequency, collocation and concordance using the BNC at the same site rather than COCA. The three basic analytical operations are word frequency counts, concordance and collocation. The crucial decision as to what it is to represent goes hand-in-hand with the question of whether you need spoken or written data or both. It is generally easier to compile written corpora because of the ready availability of written texts in electronic form: the internet is a rich source, though due attention has to be paid to copyright. Spoken corpora are generally more difficult to compile because there is the need both to make and to transcribe the recordings, which is time-consuming. The concordancing tool displays all the instances of the word or phrase looking for in the corpus with a limited amount of co-text at either side of the target word.
