ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to an important aspect of the Corpora/ELT relationship, the link between corpora and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). It focuses around three broad areas which seems to have attracted the most attention in the ESP corpus field: English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Business English, Engineering English. EAP is the area that has enjoyed most attention from researchers, and many of the principles talked about about in relation to EAP are also be applicable to Business English and Engineering English. ESP has probably been more influenced by corpus linguistics than has general English. Even in the field of ESP, however, this influence is restricted and inconsistent: it is most evident in EAP and more evident in materials and syllabuses than it is in classroom practice. The corpus of English as a Lingua Franca in Academic Settings (ELFA) has produced a significant amount of research on various aspects of EAP.
