ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides a systematic review of the literature on spontaneous communication in individuals with autism and Specific learning disability (SLD) / profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). It presents the Adult interactive study (AISI), which developed alongside school staff. The book discusses a number of methodological and data analytical issues which should be relevant to people who undertake similar studies. It reviews of a number of approaches which are widely used in the field of autism to teaching social communication. The book argues that existing developmental/relationship-based approaches focus a lot on adults and the way they interact with children with autism. It addresses to parents and practitioners and disseminates some lessons for this population resulting from the AISI study and my wider pre- and post-PhD professional. The book shows some general conclusions regarding autism intervention research.
