ABSTRACT

Institutions differ regarding the assignment of supervisors; some institutions allocate supervisors, whereas others allow students a choice. If you do have a choice, it is preferable to find a supervisor who is actually interested in the topic, rather than just choosing an instructor you personally like. To find out about the instructors academic interests, think about the courses they teach and read about their research interests and publications on the university website. Many supervisors prefer that one use email to arrange meetings and to send in drafts of their work. Although one may have written many emails to family and friends, this may be the first time that one have ever sent an email to a university instructor. Not every email includes all components, but when initiating email communication with your supervisor, it is a good idea to include an opening, the main message and a closing.
