ABSTRACT
There is intense and constant pressure for the universal adoption of systematic phonics and phonemic awareness instruction as the sole method of teaching reading. Duress has reached the point where the U.S. federal government and a number of other administrations actually legislate how teachers should teach reading and other subjects.
