ABSTRACT
Many children can read before they come to school, so obviously formal instruction in reading isn’t essential. And these are by no means the most privileged of children. Many come from large families, single-parent homes, and poor neighborhoods, and are not especially favored academically. If they arrived at school unable to read, it would be anticipated that they might have great difficulty doing so. Yet already they can read. What enabled them to get the necessary understanding?
