ABSTRACT

Dialling the mobile phone number, what you hear at the other end is a series of cracks, drips and creaks. Echoing down the phone line the dripping seems endless, every now and then there is a sudden splash, the drip ping contin ues. In 2007 artist Katie Paterson installed an under wa ter micro phone (or hydro phone) in Jökulsárlón, an outlet glacial lagoon of Vatnajökull – the largest glacier in Europe. The micro phone was connec ted to an ampli fier, which was in turn connec ted to the mobile phone the audi ence dialled into from anywhere in the world. The piece Vatnajökull (the sound of) created a real-time encounter between the caller-listener and an ecosys tem under stress as a result of global warming (Kanngieser, 2014).
