ABSTRACT

The present chapter takes some of the key terms in the emerging prosody and explores them in more depth. These are ‘rhythm’, ‘prosody’, ‘pulse’, ‘measure’, ‘turn’, ‘syncopation’, ‘cadence’ and ‘compression’. In some cases, the terms derive from classic and conventional metrical theory; in other cases, they are appropriated from linguistic theory or dance. Most of them have associations with music notation. Once an exegesis of these key terms is complete, an extended example of their use in practice is provided.
