ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an introduction to the organization, aims, and form of B-Club. Marjorie Faulstich Orellana considers the many ways in which our work in this program blurred borders: between home and school; adults and children; teachers and students; research, teaching, and service. B-Club was institutionally located within University-Community Links (UC Links), a larger network of after-school programs, many of them adaptations of the Fifth Dimension tradition first established by Mike Cole. She locates the program in relation to other sites as well as its historical legacy, as the direct descendent of a program established by Kris Gutierrez at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1994. B-Club is an after-school program. It is situated somewhere within the "home-school" divide that has been talked about so much in educational research. Members of the research team took on different slices of the data, based on the questions they wanted to pursue.
