ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the nature and purpose of whole school systems and their influence on classroom practice. The overriding purpose of whole school systems is to secure an environment in which every pupil can benefit from the learning opportunities on offer. When considering whole school systems from behaviour for learning perspective, the emphasis is on how individuals experience and interpret procedures and practices that have been designed for the whole school population. A school's behaviour policy is central to defining the whole school approach. The requirement for schools to have a behaviour policy is firmly established in legislation. The chapter explores school behaviour policies in the context of the principles of the behaviour for learning approach. For many years, national policy and guidance has encouraged a framework for managing behaviour in schools based on rules, rewards and sanctions.
