ABSTRACT

Pronouns, like determiners, add such conceptual meaning to nouns as identifiability/specificity, focus, number, ownership, and possession and possession-like qualities (e.g., preference, affiliation). Pronouns are associated with the notion of person—for example, first person, second person, and third person—designating the perspective or point of view represented and referred to in the discourse. The use of pronouns in discourse reveals much about speakers’ and writers’ stances and viewpoints vis-à-vis the topics and referents they are speaking and writing about.
