ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a range of different writing apps for creating different kinds of digital texts. Writing to learn, therefore, includes use of different literacy practices contributing to acquiring disciplinary literacies, practices involved in writing integral to learning as captured in the 5-12 English Language Arts Common Core State Standards writing standards. An essential component of writing to learn is the ability to take notes. Novice note-takers write while the teacher is talking, and rather than listening to organize, reflect on, and retrieve information and encode it to write down important points, students simply write down the text coming from the teacher as it is delivered. Teachers can also use different iOS and Android apps for having students write essays or reports that can build on the material developed through uses of note-taking or annotation, concept-mapping, blogging, and Twitter apps.
